French settlements continued to grow on the Gulf Coast, with the settlement of New Orleans in 1718 and other (unsuccessful) attempts to expand into Spanish-controlled Texas and Florida. By the 1740s, French leaders such as Father Jean-Louis Le Loutre orchestrated a guerrilla war with their Mi’kmaq allies against British attempts to expand Protestant settlements in peninsular Nova Scotia. Field argues that the number “may have been higher than the traditional figure of six, but it is likely it did not run into the hundreds”: he notes that the London Gazette “did not record a single fatality” and that had there been a significant death toll it would have been reflected in polemical accounts and petitions for charity. This increasing frustration led to Mercury writing the song “Death on Two Legs”, which would serve as the opening track to A Night at the Opera. The Garibaldi Volcanic Belt includes the Bridge River Cones, Mount Cayley, Mount Fee, Mount Garibaldi, Mount Price, Mount Meager massif, the Squamish Volcanic Field, and more smaller volcanoes. Due to repeated continental and alpine glaciations, many of the volcanic deposits in the belt reflect complex interactions between magma composition, topography, and changing ice configurations. The deaths were all due to smoke inhalation. Only a few deaths from the fire are officially recorded, and deaths are traditionally believed to have been few. However, Southwark was preserved by an open space between buildings on the bridge which acted as a firebreak.
