This historic royal palace was completely consumed, burning all night. The fire’s spread to the north reached “the financial heart of the City”. On Tuesday, the fire spread over nearly the whole City, destroying St Paul’s Cathedral and leaping the River Fleet to threaten Charles II’s court at Whitehall. The reconstruction saw improvements in hygiene and fire safety: wider streets, open and accessible wharves along the length of the Thames, with no houses obstructing access to the river, and, most importantly, buildings constructed of brick and stone, not wood. New public buildings were created on their predecessors’ sites; perhaps the most famous is St Paul’s Cathedral and its smaller cousins, Christopher Wren’s 51 new churches. In Moorfields, a large public park immediately north of the City, there was a great encampment of homeless refugees. Room 208, a room located in the northeast corner of the north wing housing Sister Mary St. Canice Lyng’s seventh grade class, had twelve student deaths out of forty-seven students. It was located at 909 North Avers Avenue in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago’s West Side, on the northeast corner of West Iowa Street and North Avers Avenue (some sources describe the school as “in Austin”). The fire department was initially hampered because they had been incorrectly directed to the rectory address around the corner at 3808 W. Iowa Street. After instructing two boys who were emptying trash baskets in the boiler room to leave the area, Raymond rushed to the rectory and asked the housekeeper to call the fire department. Christopher Wren, as surveyor-general of the King’s Works, was asked to submit a design. In 1899, George William Parker who had designed fire stations in Bootle and Belfast, and been referred to as the “architect of the world’s fire service” was appointed Chief of the Manchester Fire Brigade and asked his opinion on the proposal. Parker reported that the site on Newton Street was unsuitable and submitted plans for a fire station on a site bounded by London Road, Whitworth Street, Minshull Street South and Fairfield Street. Parker convinced the city council to choose his proposals rather than those on Newton Street. The City of London Corporation borrowed heavily to fund its rebuilding, defaulting on its loans in 1683; as a result, it had its privileges stripped by Charles. King Charles II sailed down from Whitehall in the Royal barge to inspect the scene. The National Fire Protection Association estimated that about 68% of all U.S. By the 1660s, London was by far the largest city in Britain and the third largest in the Western world, estimated at 300,000 to 400,000 inhabitants. In 1962, a boy who was a student at Our Lady of the Angels at the time of the fire, confessed to setting the blaze. Order in the streets broke down as rumours arose of suspicious foreigners setting fires. He hoped that the River Fleet would form a natural firebreak, making a stand with his firemen from the Fleet Bridge and down to the Thames. There was panic on Wednesday night in the encampments at Parliament Hill, Moorfields, and Islington: a light in the sky over Fleet Street started a story that 50,000 French and Dutch immigrants had risen, and were marching towards Moorfields to murder and pillage. In principle, water was available from a system of elm pipes which supplied 30,000 houses via a high water tower at Cornhill, filled from the river at high tide, and also via a reservoir of Hertfordshire spring water in Islington. By Sunday evening it “was already the most damaging fire to strike London in living memory”, having travelled 500 metres (1,600 ft) west along the river. If it had, it would have opened a hole that would have served to vent much of the smoke and gases. Its height marks its distance from the site of the shop of Thomas Farriner (or Farynor), the king’s baker, where the blaze began. A five-man sub-committee was set up and recommended a site on Newton Street. The plot is now “within the roadway of Monument Street”. One of the priests, Father Joseph Ognibene, and Sam Tortorice, a parent of one of the students, were able to rescue most of the students in room 209 by passing them through a courtyard window on the second floor into the annex. Priests from the rectory raced to the scene, grabbing frightened students and escorting them through the smoke to the doors. Despite Raymond’s visit to the rectory soon after 2:30 p.m. The destroyer Shark spotted the armoured cruiser SMS Roon and her escorts at about 07:00, but she could not transmit the message until 07:25. Warrender received the signal – as did the battlecruiser New Zealand – but Beatty did not, despite the fact that New Zealand had been specifically tasked to relay messages between the destroyers and Beatty. The City Council of Chicago passed a law requiring that a fire alarm box be installed in front of schools and other public assembly venues. Fire Fight Australia was a fundraising benefit concert held on Sunday, 16 February 2020, as a means for raising funds for the national bushfire relief following the 2019-20 Australian bushfire season, known as the ‘Black Summer’. In 1959, the National Fire Protection Association’s report on the blaze exonerated the rapid response of the Chicago Fire Department and its initial priority to rescue pupils rather than merely fight the flames. George, the hero of Charlie Fletcher’s children’s book about unLondon Stoneheart, has a fight at the top of the Monument with a raven and a gargoyle. Facilities included a laundry, gym, billiards room and children’s play-areas. They hurriedly entered the rear door of Room 211 and notified their teacher, Sister Mary Helaine O’Neill. Several ladders were placed near Room 208’s windows. But smoke, heat, and flames quickly forced them to the windows. Firefighters struggled desperately to pull students and nuns from windows as those classrooms partially filled with screaming children exploded. The funeral for the three nuns took place first. Recognizing the trap they were in, some of the nuns encouraged the children to sit at their desks or gather in a semicircle and pray. The three boys killed died at their desks due to a spurt of heated gases. Parkes gives the total officers killed as 67 instead of 57, presumably a typographical error. The total cost of the monument was £13,450 11s 9d., of which £11,300 was paid to the mason-contractor Joshua Marshall. Queen Mary carried a total of 880 rounds during wartime for 110 shells per gun. Sister Mary Helaine O’Neill, the teacher, was severely burned, but survived. Sister Mary St. Canice also died. The sole member of her class, Queen Mary shared many features with the Lion-class battlecruisers, including her eight 13.5-inch (343 mm) guns. The swirling winds carried sparks and burning flakes long distances to lodge on thatched roofs and in wooden gutters, causing seemingly unrelated house fires to break out far from their source and giving rise to rumours that fresh fires were being set on purpose. Through the day, the flames began to move eastward from the neighbourhood of Pudding Lane, straight against the prevailing east wind and towards the Tower of London with its gunpowder stores. The wind dropped on Tuesday evening, and the firebreaks created by the garrison finally began to take effect on Wednesday, 5 September.
By the time large-scale demolitions were ordered on Sunday night, the wind had already fanned the bakery fire into a firestorm which defeated such measures. Samuel Pepys ascended the Tower of London on Sunday morning to view the fire from the battlements. The Royalist perspective of the fire as accidental was opposed by the Whig view questioning the loyalties of Catholics in general and the Duke of York in particular. Suspicion soon arose in the threatened city that the fire was no accident. Fires were common in the crowded wood-built city with its open fireplaces, candles, ovens, and stores of combustibles. Manchester Fire Brigade by the Greater Manchester Fire Service precipitated the relocation of the brigade’s headquarters to a new facility in Swinton. The range had grown too far for accurate shooting, so Beatty altered course four points to port to close the range again between 16:12 and 16:15. This manoeuvre exposed Lion to the fire of the German battlecruisers, and she was hit several times. They would remove what they could carry of their belongings to a safer area; some moved their belongings and themselves “four and five times” in a single day. National television networks interrupted their regular programming to announce details as the scope of the disaster widened. WGN-AM radio broadcast continuous updates of the fire, with Chicago Police Officer Leonard Baldy providing observations from an overhead helicopter. A color guard of 100 police officers and firefighters accompanied the coffins into the church. For 27 of the young victims whose families accepted the offer to participate in it, a Solemn Requiem Mass and funeral service took place at the Illinois National Guard Armory abutting Humboldt Park, as the parish church was not large enough to accommodate the huge crowd. Trained bands were put on guard and foreigners arrested in locations throughout England. Suspicions rose to panic and collective paranoia on Monday, and both the Trained Bands and the Coldstream Guards focused less on fire fighting and more on rounding up foreigners and anyone else appearing suspicious, arresting them, rescuing them from mobs, or both. Halfway up, he suffered a panic attack, but persevered and made it to the top, where he found it “horrid to be so monstrous a way up in the air, so far above London and all its spires”.
Refugees escaping outwards, away from the centre of destruction, were blocked by soldiers trying to keep the streets clear for firefighters, causing further panic. The perception of a need to get beyond the walls took root only late on the Monday, and then there were near-panic scenes at the gates as distraught refugees tried to get out with their bundles, carts, horses, and wagons. Most refugees camped in any nearby available unburned area to see if they could salvage anything from their homes. The pipe chase made an uninterrupted conduit up to the cockloft above the second-floor classrooms (see “Evacuation” below). Because the archdiocese is the premier see of the United States and the downtown basilica was the nation’s first Catholic cathedral, this second edifice now serves as co-cathedral. The second floor of the north wing had become a perfect fire trap. 2:42 p.m. One minute later, a second telephone call was received from Barbara Glowacki, the owner of a candy store on the alley along the north wing. Glowacki used her private telephone in her apartment behind the store to notify authorities. Glowacki took injured children into her candy store beside the school to escape the winter chill while they awaited medical attention. Students hung their flammable winter coats on hooks in the hallway (there were no lockers). The temperature continued to increase until a flashover occurred in the hallway and several of the classrooms at approximately 2:55 p.m. Maximum bunkerage was 3,600 long tons (3,660 t) of coal and 1,170 long tons (1,190 t) of fuel oil to be sprayed on the coal to increase its burn rate. A duty was imposed on coal to support civic rebuilding costs. Cases were heard and a verdict usually given within a day; without the Fire Court, lengthy legal proceedings would have seriously delayed the rebuilding which was so necessary if London was to recover. The fire resulted in the emergence of the first insurance companies, starting with Nicholas Barbon’s Fire Office. Some of the students were buried in other cemeteries: 18 in St. Joseph Cemetery, 18 in St. Adalbert Cemetery, 12 in Mount Carmel Cemetery, 1 in St. Nicholas Cemetery, and 1 in Norway Cemetery in Norway, Michigan. Father Joseph Ognibene joined Tortorice and rescued students. The elementary school was operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and had an enrollment of approximately 1600 students. Normally 63 students occupied the room; at the time, 13 boys helped with a clothing drive at the church and 2 male students stayed home that day due to illness. The area was also home to several other first, second, and third-generation immigrant groups, including German Americans, Polish Americans and other Slavic Americans. OLiS.
