The eruption was one of the largest of the 20th century, only slightly less in magnitude to that of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. The eruption had a volcanic explosivity index of 6. Today, Santiaguito is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo is the world’s second-largest eruption of the 20th century. 1991). Mountains of Fire: The Nature of Volcanoes. Her wreck was discovered in 1991 and rests in pieces, some of which are upside down, on the floor of the North Sea. The volcano was dormant from 1977 then showed signs of unrest since 1991 with strong seismic activity and ground-fracturing events, as well as the formation of small mud geysers on parts of the island. The last eruption of this dominantly basaltic volcano in 1707 ejected andesitic pumice and formed a large new crater on the east flank. Major eruptions may completely expel the lake water. All Cenozoic volcanoes of Bolivia are part of the Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ) of the Andean Volcanic Belt that results due to processes involved in the subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate. The story is centered around a small group of survivors of the fire and how the tragedy affected their lives until present day. All of those who perished on the day of the fire died when smoke, heat, fire, and toxic gases cut off their means of escape through corridors and stairways. A total of 92 pupils and 3 nuns ultimately died when smoke, heat, fire, and toxic gases cut off their normal means of egress through corridors and stairways. Demolishing the houses downwind of a dangerous fire was often an effective way of containing the destruction by means of firehooks or explosives. By law, every parish church had to hold equipment for these efforts: long ladders, leather buckets, axes, and “firehooks” for pulling down buildings. However, Southwark was preserved by an open space between buildings on the bridge which acted as a firebreak. Two other doors were chained open when they should have been closed; these doors were at the first and second floor levels leading into the annex. The station’s first motorised fire appliance arrived in 1911, five years after it opened. Taal Volcano has had 33 recorded eruptions since 1572. A devastating eruption occurred in 1911, which claimed more than a thousand lives. Mayon Volcano is the Philippines’ most active volcano. Several types of volcanic activity are present, including stratovolcanoes, shield volcanoes, Hawaiian-style fissure eruptions and geysers. This arc includes nearly 20 major volcanoes, among a total of over 4,000 separate volcanic vents including numerous stratovolcanoes, shield volcanoes, lava domes, and cinder cones, along with a few isolated examples of rarer volcanic forms such as tuyas. This tour was necessary for regaining funds, and its cancellation was a major setback. The Garibaldi Volcanic Belt includes the Bridge River Cones, Mount Cayley, Mount Fee, Mount Garibaldi, Mount Price, Mount Meager massif, the Squamish Volcanic Field, and more smaller volcanoes. More than 20 volcanoes have erupted in the western Canada during the Holocene Epoch but only 6 are directly related to subduction: Bridge River Cones, Mount Cayley, Mount Garibaldi, Garibaldi Lake, Silverthrone Caldera, and Mount Meager massif. The Cascade Volcanic Arc lies in the western United States. Antarctica and the western islands of Indonesia are excluded and the Izu, Bonin, and Mariana Islands are included. The eastern islands of Indonesia (Sulawesi, the Lesser Sunda Islands (excluding Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa and Sangeang), Halmahera, the Banda Islands and the Sangihe Islands) are geologically associated with subduction of the Pacific Plate or its related minor plates and, therefore, the eastern islands are often regarded as part of the Ring of Fire. Shortly after the flashover, a wide portion of the school’s roof collapsed over rooms 208, 209, and part of 210, and the massive downward rush of heat likely killed several other students and their teachers in rooms 208 and 210 instantly (Room 209 lost only one child, Beverly Burda, in the room itself, and she had been overcome by smoke inhalation before the roof collapsed). The most recent activity takes place in the eastern belt, starting in the north at the Shiveluch volcanic complex, which lies at the junction of the Aleutian and Kamchatka volcanic arcs.
Hanson takes issue with the idea that there were only a few deaths, enumerating known deaths from hunger and exposure among survivors of the fire, “huddled in shacks or living among the ruins that had once been their homes” in the cold winter that followed. Musgrave and Company to prevent the odour from the horses’ stalls entering the firemens’ living quarters. By Sunday evening it “was already the most damaging fire to strike London in living memory”, having travelled 500 metres (1,600 ft) west along the river. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it at number 128 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Because Trident had invested over £200,000 in promoting Queen, the group were required to pay half that to buy out their contracts, and they had to give Trident 1% royalties from their next six albums. It has been hailed as Queen’s best album, and one of the greatest albums in music history. The History Press. p. Cass Series: Naval Policy and History. Centre for Economic Policy Research. By the time the students and their teachers in the second floor classrooms realized the danger (and the occupants of several of the rooms, until that moment, did not realize the danger), their sole escape route into the hallway was impassable. Subsequently, they ended their contract with Trident Studios and did not use their studios for the album (the sole exception being “God Save the Queen”, which had been recorded the previous year). The sole member of her class, Queen Mary shared many features with the Lion-class battlecruisers, including her eight 13.5-inch (343 mm) guns. She was completed in 1913 and participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight as part of the Grand Fleet in 1914. Like most of the modern British battlecruisers, the ship never left the North Sea during the war. It lies between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Okhotsk Sea to the west. Together with the six dreadnoughts of the 2nd Battle Squadron, Beatty’s 1st BCS – now reduced to four ships, including Lion – was detached from the Grand Fleet in an attempt to intercept the Germans near Dogger Bank. On 31 May 1916, Queen Mary put to sea with the rest of the Battlecruiser Fleet to intercept a sortie by the High Seas Fleet into the North Sea. They are formed by subduction of the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. Immediately offshore along the Pacific coast of the peninsula runs the 10,500-metre-deep (34,400 ft) Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, where subduction of the Pacific Plate fuels the volcanism. This Dynamic Earth: the Story of Plate Tectonics. It formed as a result of subduction of the Juan de Fuca Plate (a remnant of the much larger Farallon Plate) under the North American Plate along the Cascadia subduction zone. Eruptions of basaltic to rhyolitic volcanoes and hypabyssal rocks of the Alert Bay Volcanic Belt in northern Vancouver Island are probably linked with the subducted margin flanked by the Explorer and Juan de Fuca Plates at the Cascadia subduction zone. New Zealand contains the world’s strongest concentration of youthful rhyolitic volcanoes, and voluminous sheets of tuff blanket much of the North Island. Although none of Canada’s volcanoes are currently erupting, several volcanoes, volcanic fields, and volcanic centers are considered potentially active. Volcanoes in this belt include Mount Noel, the Clisbako Caldera Complex, Lightning Peak, Black Dome Mountain, and many lava flows. Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team. Due to repeated continental and alpine glaciations, many of the volcanic deposits in the belt reflect complex interactions between magma composition, topography, and changing ice configurations. UK Retail Price Index inflation figures are based on data from Clark, Gregory (2017). “The Annual RPI and Average Earnings for Britain, 1209 to Present (New Series)”. Tinniswood as “in single figures”, although he adds that some deaths must have gone unrecorded and that, besides direct deaths from burning and smoke inhalation, refugees also perished in the impromptu camps.
Casualty figures are in general agreement, although the number of survivors varies. To complete your look as a Disney Princess you can get Sleeping Beauty slippers, tiaras and accessories online, and right royally sparkle at that special party or when you are Trick or Treating this Halloween. The committee’s report was presented to Parliament on 22 January 1667. Versions of the report that appeared in print concluded that Hubert was one of a number of Catholic plotters responsible for starting the fire. The lead vocals were performed by Taylor on the studio version, and all released live versions. This decision would later become the cause of much internal friction in the band, in that while it was only the B-side, it generated an equal amount of publishing royalties for Taylor as the A-side did for Mercury. It also produced the band’s most successful single in the UK, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which became their first UK number one. Sheer Heart Attack had hinted at a working knowledge of 19th century parlour balladry, 20s ragtime and Jimi Hendrix. May has stated that he performed the song on the roof of Buckingham Palace as a homage to Jimi Hendrix’s version of “The Star-Spangled Banner”. But Cinderella had a Fairy Godmother, who wove her magic so that Cinderella could go the ball at the Royal Palace. The Duke of York’s command post at Temple Bar, where Strand meets Fleet Street, was supposed to stop the fire’s westward advance towards the Palace of Whitehall. On Tuesday, the fire spread over nearly the whole City, destroying St Paul’s Cathedral and leaping the River Fleet to threaten Charles II’s court at Whitehall. London Road. The coroner’s court and gas-meter testing station replaced the proposed public library and gym. James and his life guards rode up and down the streets all Monday, “rescuing foreigners from the mob” and attempting to keep order. Ordinances to strengthen Chicago’s fire code and new amendments to the Illinois state fire code were passed. In NFPA 101: Life Safety Code Handbook: 2009 Edition. Bring a little magic into your life this Halloween or for a special Fancy Dress party by dressing up as Cinderella. The lyrics were inspired by one of the band’s roadies, Johnathan Harris, whose Triumph TR4 was evidently the “love of his life”. The song is dedicated to him, with the album saying: “Dedicated to Johnathan Harris, boy racer to the end”. By the end of the 1960s maintenance was becoming increasingly expensive, and the building’s design ill-suited to modern fire appliances. When the air reached the end of the circuit, in the stalls, it was extracted from the building. This caused further drafts of air and an additional oxygen supply to feed the flames. The concert was the most watched program of the night on Australia’s free to air multi channels and subscription channels, and the fourth most watched program overall, peaking at 4.7 million viewers. The majority of the eruptions in this belt happened either 6-10 million years ago (Miocene) or 2-3 million years ago (Pliocene), although with some slightly more recent eruptions (in the Pleistocene). The most recent period of activity lasted from 1965 to 1977, and was characterized by the interaction of magma with the lake water, which produced violent phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions. More recent eruptions have occurred. Since 1975, seismic activity appears to have been associated with some volcanoes in British Columbia including the six subduction-related volcanoes as well as intraplate volcanoes such as Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field. During live performances, Mercury would usually rededicate the song to “a real motherfucker of a gentleman”, although this line was censored on the version that appeared on their Live Killers album in 1979. Other than on the live album, he said it was dedicated to a “motherfucker I used to know”. The smoke and fumes from these hits caused SMS Derfflinger to lose sight of Lion – which had sheered out of line to starboard – and to switch her fire to Queen Mary, now visible to Derfflinger’s gunnery officer as the second ship in the British line and therefore assumed to be Princess Royal, at 16:16. Queen Mary hit Seydlitz again at 16:17 and knocked out one gun of her secondary armament. Hipper’s battlecruisers spotted the Battlecruiser Fleet to their west at 15:20, but Beatty’s ships did not spot the Germans to their east until 15:30. Two minutes later, he ordered a course change to east south-east to position himself astride the German’s line of retreat and called his ships’ crews to action stations.
The British ships were still in the process of making their turn, as only the two leading ships – Lion and Princess Royal – had steadied on their course when the Germans opened fire. She is usually pictured wearing a dress that that has yellow skirts, with a blue bodice and red sleeves. The character of Snow White is known for her black hair, snowy complexion and red lips. For their self-titled “guitar orchestrations”, May overdubbed his homemade Red Special guitar through an amplifier built by Deacon, known as the Deacy Amp, later released commercially as the “Brian May” amplifier by Vox. The matter eventually reached a turning point when bassist John Deacon, who had recently married, was denied a cash advance of £4,000 by manager Norman Sheffield to put a deposit on a house. Queen single to be written by John Deacon. Grant, who was eager to manage Queen, had intended the band would sign with Swan Song, Led Zeppelin’s label, and suggested Queen go on tour while he sorted out their finances. The group feared Grant would prioritise Led Zeppelin over them, and were reluctant to sign with Swan Song, so they contacted Reid. The City of London had been a stronghold of republicanism during the English Civil War (1642-1651), and the wealthy and economically dynamic capital still had the potential to be a threat to Charles II, as had been demonstrated by several republican uprisings in London in the early 1660s. The City magistrates were of the generation that had fought in the Civil War, and could remember how Charles I’s grab for absolute power had led to that national trauma. Successful predictions of the onset of the climactic eruption led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from the surrounding areas, saving many lives, but as the surrounding areas were severely damaged by pyroclastic flows, ash deposits, and later, lahars caused by rainwater remobilising earlier volcanic deposits, thousands of houses were destroyed. An earthquake at 8:32 am on May 18, 1980, caused the entire weakened north face to slide away, suddenly exposing the partly molten, gas-rich rock in the volcano to lower pressure. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire that severely damaged the soundstage housing sets for the 21st 007 installment, and the first one featuring new Bond Daniel Craig, but this has SPECTRE written all over it. In addition, she was the first battlecruiser to mount a sternwalk. Through the day, the flames began to move eastward from the neighbourhood of Pudding Lane, straight against the prevailing east wind and towards the Tower of London with its gunpowder stores. Contemporary maps record the site as 23 Pudding Lane. Ships of the Royal Navy: The Complete Record of all Fighting Ships of the Royal Navy (Rev. ed.). Reid was initially doubtful about managing another band; however, he accepted after learning it was Queen, and advised the group to “go into the studio and make the best record you can”.
He composed it while he was learning to play piano, and played the Wurlitzer electric piano (which Mercury disliked) on the recording and overdubbed the bass guitar afterwards. The play entitled When Angels Wept by playwright Charles Grippo had two productions in Chicago in 2013 and was based on the Our Lady of the Angels School fire. May had asked Deacon to play double bass as a joke but a couple of days later he found Deacon in the studio with the instrument, and he had already learned to play it. All piano, bass and drum parts, as well as the vocal arrangements, were thought up by Mercury on a daily basis and written down “in blocks” (using note names instead of sheets) on a phonebook. A monument there lists the names of all 95 victims. In a study published in 2020, researchers from Queen Mary University of London used the shaft of the monument stairwell to measure deformation in a hanging wire. On 29 November 2011, the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed the CPO had been rejected. In November 2013, Britannia applied to extend the 2010 planning permissions but despite objections the applications were approved on technical grounds in December 2013. The council considered applying for a CPO for the second time in September 2014 and confirmed its intention to do so in December 2014 and meet with FoLRFS in early 2015. FoLRFS received a grant from Locality’s Community Assets in Difficult Ownership (CADO) programme to pay for public outreach work. Manchester City Council decided to continue with the CPO. In 1897 the Manchester Watch Committee was considering a replacement for its fire station on Jackson’s Row. The reorganisation meant the number of appliances was reduced, until only three remained at the station. The fire station operated for eighty years, housing the firemen, their families, and the horse-drawn appliances that were replaced by motorised vehicles a few years after its opening. The funeral procession had several hundred vehicles. The funeral for the three nuns took place first. Every capital ship since the design of the battleship Dreadnought in 1905 had placed the officers’ quarters closer to their action stations amidships; after complaints from the Fleet, Queen Mary was the first battlecruiser to restore the quarters to their traditional place in the stern. Queen Mary was ordered, together with the four battleships of the King George V class, under the 1910-11 Naval Programme. All four turrets were provided with 9-foot rangefinders and ‘B’ and ‘X’ turrets were further outfitted to serve as auxiliary control positions. The 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron – which had been screening for Beatty’s ships – detached to pursue the German cruisers, but a misinterpreted signal from the British battlecruisers sent them back to their screening positions. Vice Admiral Sir George Warrender – commanding the 2nd Battle Squadron – had received a signal at 05:40 that the destroyer Lynx was engaging enemy destroyers, although Beatty had not. The brand-new light cruiser Arethusa had been crippled earlier in the battle and was under fire from the German light cruisers SMS Strassburg and SMS Cöln when Beatty’s battlecruisers loomed out of the mist at 12:37. Strassburg was able to duck into the mists and evade fire, but Cöln remained visible and was quickly crippled by fire from the squadron. The light cruiser Southampton spotted the light cruiser SMS Stralsund and signalled a report to Beatty. This confusion allowed the German light cruisers to escape, and alerted Hipper to the location of the British battlecruisers. At 12:25, the light cruisers of the II Scouting Group began to pass the British forces searching for Hipper.
With this turn, Hipper was falling back on the High Seas Fleet, then about 60 miles (97 km) behind him. Her range was 5,610 nautical miles (10,390 km; 6,460 mi) at a speed of 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph). Their range was 4,500 yards (4,115 m) at 45 knots (83 km/h; 52 mph) or 10,000 yards (9,144 m) at 29 knots (54 km/h; 33 mph). He turned in pursuit and reduced her to a flaming hulk in only three salvos at a range of 6,000 yards (5,486 m). This began what was to be called the “Run to the South” as Beatty changed course to steer east-southeast at 15:45, paralleling Hipper’s course, now that the range closed to under 18,000 yards (16,000 m). The building now houses the Galapagos Charter School; the Mission of Our Lady of Angels church next door remains in operation. The mood was now so volatile that Charles feared a full-scale London rebellion against the monarchy. Flight from London and settlement elsewhere were strongly encouraged by Charles II, who feared a London rebellion amongst the dispossessed refugees. Although it was never implemented, Wren’s plan for the rebuilding of London has itself had a significant cultural impact. The Rebuilding of London Act 1666 banned wood from the exterior of buildings, regulated the cost of building materials and the wages of workers, and set out a rebuilding period of three years, after which the land could be sold. They had a narrow footprint at ground level, but maximised their use of land by “encroaching” on the street with the gradually increasing size of their upper storeys. With its 12 ft (3.7 m) ceilings and a basement that extended partially above ground level, the school’s second-floor windows were 25 ft (7.6 m) above the ground, making jumping from them extremely risky, exacerbated by the fact that the grade surface under all windows was concrete or crushed rock. The fire continued to strengthen, and several more minutes elapsed before the school’s fire alarm rang. The school did not have a fire alarm box outside on the sidewalk, the nearest one being a block and a half away. Between the delayed discovery and reporting of the blaze and the misdirection of the response units to the wrong address, the firefighters arrived too late. According to statement issued by the studio, three people were at the studio at the time of the blaze escaped without injury. In 1959, the National Fire Protection Association’s report on the blaze blamed civic authorities and the Archdiocese of Chicago for “housing their children in fire traps” – their words – such as Our Lady of the Angels School. Our Lady of the Angels fire, one of which was an increased number of law-mandated fire drills throughout the academic year. In principle, water was available from a system of elm pipes which supplied 30,000 houses via a high water tower at Cornhill, filled from the river at high tide, and also via a reservoir of Hertfordshire spring water in Islington. After 46 years of use and some considerable damage due to water and smoke the congregation decided to restore the cathedral organs in 2005. It chose Schantz Organ Co. of Ohio to restore and replace many parts of the original instruments. The flames crept towards the riverfront and set alight the water wheels under London Bridge, eliminating the supply of piped water. When Bloodworth arrived, the flames were consuming the adjoining houses and creeping towards the warehouses and flammable stores on the riverfront. The neighbours tried to help douse the fire; after an hour, the parish constables arrived and judged that the adjoining houses had better be demolished to prevent further spread. It had been crammed full of rescued goods and its crypt filled with the tightly packed stocks of the printers and booksellers in adjoining Paternoster Row. The guns could be depressed to −3° and elevated to 20°, although the director controlling the turrets was limited to 15° 21′ until prisms were installed before the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 to allow full elevation. Jutland: The German Perspective: A New View of the Great Battle, 31 May 1916. London: Brockhampton Press. In return, Queen Mary had been hit twice by Seydlitz before 16:21 with unknown effects, but the German battlecruiser hit the turret face of ‘Q’ turret at that time and knocked out the right-hand gun in the turret.
At 12:30, Beatty turned his battlecruisers towards the German ships. The fast battlecruisers were to conduct the bombardment, while the entire High Seas Fleet was to station itself east of Dogger Bank to provide cover for their return and to destroy any elements of the Royal Navy that responded to the raid. At about the same time, the ambulance station closed and was converted into the fire brigade’s workshops. The original organs were Opus 9200 of the M. P. Moller Company of Hagerstown, Maryland. In addition to new pipe work, voice work, new wind chests, Schantz built two new identical four-manual consoles: one for the Gallery and one for the Chancel allowing the organist to control both organs from either location. The cathedral has two organs. Pepys took a coach back into the city from Whitehall, but reached only St Paul’s Cathedral before he had to get out and walk. Nicholson, Rebecca (17 October 2014). “The Great Fire; The Knick review – One period drama takes a while to warm up, the other is deliciously gory”. Suspicions rose to panic and collective paranoia on Monday, and both the Trained Bands and the Coldstream Guards focused less on fire fighting and more on rounding up foreigners and anyone else appearing suspicious, arresting them, rescuing them from mobs, or both. Trained bands were put on guard and foreigners arrested in locations throughout England. Foreigners were immediately suspected because of the ongoing Second Anglo-Dutch War. Abroad in the Netherlands, the Great Fire of London was seen as a divine retribution for Holmes’s Bonfire, the burning by the English of a Dutch town during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The fears of the homeless focused on the French and Dutch, England’s enemies in the ongoing Second Anglo-Dutch War; these substantial immigrant groups became victims of street violence. The school was one of several buildings associated with the large Roman Catholic parish; others included a church, a rectory, which was adjacent to the church, a convent of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was across Iowa Street from the school, and two buildings one block east on Hamlin Avenue referred to by the parish as Joseph Hall and Mary Hall respectively, which housed kindergarten and first-grade classes. The modern three-story building with 32 classrooms plus a kindergarten opened in September 1960. Donations from around the world helped to fund the new construction. Kelley also died, making a total of 29 deaths in Room 210-the most deaths of any of the classrooms. One of the students who survived the fire was 8-year-old third grader Jonathan Friga, who would go on to fame as Jonathan Cain, keyboard and rhythm guitar player for the rock band Journey. Guitar layering is one of May’s distinctive techniques as a rock guitarist. They employed a complex production that extensively used multitrack recording, and the songs incorporated a wide range of styles, such as ballads, music hall, dixieland, hard rock and progressive rock influences. The complex contained stables for the horses that pulled the fire appliances, and a blacksmith’s workshop. The city council was concerned that the state of the fire station was limiting regeneration in the area, including a proposed government complex on the former Mayfield Railway Station site. They regained control of their back catalogue, while their former publishing company, Feldman, was taken over by EMI. London Road Fire Station is a former fire station in Manchester, England. In addition to a fire station, the building housed a police station, an ambulance station, a bank, a coroner’s court, and a gas-meter testing station. Parker reported that the site on Newton Street was unsuitable and submitted plans for a fire station on a site bounded by London Road, Whitworth Street, Minshull Street South and Fairfield Street. London Road, Whitworth Street, Minshull Street South and Fairfield Street. The closure left the ground floor on the Whitworth Street side empty. He panicked when faced with a sudden emergency and, when pressed, made the oft-quoted remark, “A woman could piss it out”, and left. Bloodworth was responsible as Lord Mayor for coordinating the firefighting, but he had apparently left the City; his name is not mentioned in any contemporaneous accounts of the Monday’s events. Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley ordered flags across the city lowered to half staff. The City was surrounded by a ring of inner suburbs where most Londoners lived. Areas to the west of London received the highest number of new residents, but there was a general increase in the population density of the suburbs surrounding London. Throughout Monday, the fire spread to the west and north.
The fire pushed north on Monday into the heart of the City. Executives at EMI were unsure that the song was a good idea, May was unsure about the lyrics and felt bad that Mercury was singing it, but ultimately realised it was the songwriter’s final choice as to what should be sung. The closing track was an instrumental cover of “God Save the Queen”, the British national anthem, for which May was credited as the arranger. Bird, P. A family court judge later concluded the evidence was insufficient to substantiate the confession. Sunday 2 September. The family was trapped upstairs but managed to climb from an upstairs window to the house next door, except for a maidservant who was too frightened to try, thus becoming the first victim. The first Rebuilding Act, passed in 1669, stipulated that “the better to preserve the memory of this dreadful visitation”, a column of either brass or stone should be set up on Fish Street Hill, on or near the site of Farynor’s bakery, where the fire began. The fire department was initially hampered because they had been incorrectly directed to the rectory address around the corner at 3808 W. Iowa Street. The houses of the bankers in Lombard Street began to burn on Monday afternoon, prompting a rush to rescue their stacks of gold coins before they melted. The wind dropped on Tuesday evening, and the firebreaks created by the garrison finally began to take effect on Wednesday, 5 September. It was often possible to open a pipe near a burning building and connect it to a hose to spray on a fire or fill buckets. Firefighters tried to manoeuvre the engines to the river to fill their tanks, and several of the engines fell into the Thames. On this occasion, an unknown number of fire engines were either wheeled or dragged through the streets. The crucial factor which frustrated firefighting efforts was the narrowness of the streets. A thousand watchmen or “bellmen” who patrolled the streets at night watched for fire as one of their duties. May, who sings all vocals and plays ukulele. Despite Raymond’s visit to the rectory soon after 2:30 p.m. Priests from the rectory raced to the scene, grabbing frightened students and escorting them through the smoke to the doors. Residents of houses along Avers Avenue opened their doors to provide sanctuary and warmth for the children. There were electric bells and lights to alert firemen to an alarm, poles to expedite the firemen’s response, suspended harnesses to allow the horses to be harnessed quickly, and electric doors. In 2000, the ERLAWS system was installed on the mountain to detect such a collapse and alert the relevant authorities. The Monument is a prominent setting in The System of the World, the third book in Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle. The Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East is one of the most active volcanic areas in the world, with 20 historically active volcanoes. Eruptions occur predominately from the central conduit and have also produced lava flows that travel far down the flanks. The swirling winds carried sparks and burning flakes long distances to lodge on thatched roofs and in wooden gutters, causing seemingly unrelated house fires to break out far from their source and giving rise to rumours that fresh fires were being set on purpose. Louis had made an offer to his aunt, the British Queen Henrietta Maria, to send food and whatever goods might be of aid in alleviating the plight of Londoners, yet he made no secret that he regarded “the fire of London as a stroke of good fortune for him ” as it reduced the risk of French ships crossing the English Channel being taken or sunk by the English fleet. Some of the bodies were so badly charred that they broke into pieces while being picked up. 1,266 crewmen were lost; eighteen survivors were picked up by the destroyers Laurel, Petard, and Tipperary, and two by the Germans. This consisted of a fire-control director mounted high in the ship which electrically provided elevation and training angles to the turrets via pointers, which the turret crewmen only had to follow. Her secondary armament consisted of sixteen BL 4-inch Mk VII guns, most of which were mounted in casemates on the forecastle deck, unlike the arrangement in the Lion class.

The barbettes were protected by nine inches of armour above the deck, but it thinned to 8 inches (203 mm) above the upper armour deck and 3 inches (76 mm) below it. Her funnel uptakes were protected by high-tensile steel splinter armour 1.5 inches (38 mm) thick on the sides and one inch thick on the ends between the upper and forecastle decks.
